There are so many organizations and companies that are investing, both financially and vocationally, into the support of our military community. From small business incubators to transition assistance, service members can receive the support they need when they end their time in service. However, one company stands out above the rest. Comcast NBCUniversal is going above and beyond for the men and women who serve our country.
Comcast NBCUniversal Received The 2017 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award
When a service member transitions out of the military, it’s oftentimes a challenge to entirely leave behind your branch. The Marines put it best, “Once a Marine, always a Marine”. That is why so many decide to continue serving within the ranks of the National Guard and Reserve. With the freedom to pursue a career in the private sector and be at the ready when your country needs you, serving in a reserve component is an ideal option for many transitioning service members.
Being at the ready and a productive employee requires flexibility and understanding from your employer. While there are federal regulations in place to protect and support members of the Guard and Reserve, Comcast NBCUniversal goes above and beyond these standards.
With things like a dedicated transition team, re-onboarding for positions outdated by technology changes, and an HR concierge service dedicated solely to military community employees and their managers. Comcast NBCUniversal ensures that an employee who gets activated has nothing to worry about except the mission at hand. Considering they also provide 15 days annual
paid time off for every Guard and Reserve employee and provide a pay differential for up to three years with continued benefits if these employees are called to active service.
For these outstanding efforts to support their employees serving in the National Guard and Reserve, Comcast NBCUniversal was one of fifteen organizations to receive the 2017 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.
A Key Funding Partner For BunkerLabs, A Cornerstone Entrepreneurial Resource for Vetpreneurs
With the skills gained while in service, veterans make great business owners and CEOs. Starting a new business is a momentous task—veteran or not. As more and more veterans transition out of the military and start their own business, there is a growing need for organizations that support the unique struggles and challenges veteran business owners face. BunkerLabs is one of the most notable organizations for veterans, offering incubator services, resources, and community support.
As the first national sponsor of BunkerLabs, Comcast NBCUniversal immediately saw the value and significance in the mission of BunkerLabs. With another long-term financial commitment made to BunkerLabs, Comcast NBCUniversal continues to believe in the necessity for a strong military entrepreneur community.
A Unique And Unmatched Partner For Military Spouses
While the service of a military spouse is oftentimes behind closed doors, military spouses are paramount to the health of our military.
Serving alongside our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen, our Nation’s military families give of themselves and give up their time with their loved ones so we may live safely and freely. Few Americans fully understand the sacrifices made by those who serve in uniform, but for spouses of service members across our country, the costs of the freedom we too often take for granted are known intimately. – Barack Obama
Things like deployments and frequent relocation hinder the ability for military spouses to have continuity and growth in their careers. Comcast NBCUniversal is one of a handful of organizations that recognize the unique circumstances military spouses face due to the military lifestyle. To support military spouses, Comcast NBCUniversal has developed several key initiatives to alleviate the downfalls of military life and invest in such an important, yet overlooked, group. First and foremost, the companies have developed an internal system for helping employed military spouses with relocation due to a long-term deployment or change in duty station.
Comcast NBCUniversal guarantees that a military spouse will have a job interview at a company branch in their new city. If a branch does not exist, Comcast NBCUniversal works with their expansive network of partner organizations to find a new role in another organization. If that does not work, they offer a transition package.
There are few employees that do so much for military spouses. For this reason, along with the fact that they have opened up a virtual customer support center in Virginia near Fort Lee specifically for military spouses as a part of the Department of Defense’s Military Spouse Employment Partnership, Comcast NBCUniversal was named the top organization in this year’s Military Spouse Friendly Employers List.
The PsychArmor Institute
Comcast NBCUniversal has made it an integrated part of their business to support the military community. They, along with a growing number of organizations, know and understand the value veterans and military spouses bring to the table. However, a mission as hefty as supporting the entire veteran and military spouse community cannot be achieved alone.
To further the cause and serve veterans and spouses through employment opportunities, Comcast NBCUniversal has partnered with The PsychArmor Institute to educate other organizations and businesses on the inherent benefits of including veterans and military spouses into an organization. Rather than keep the good news to themselves, Comcast NBCUniversal is hoping to educate others so that they can follow suit and, effectively and meaningfully, support veterans and military spouses.
If you want to model your HR structure so that it identifies and utilizes talent from the veteran and military spouse community, check out The Psych Armor Institute.
