MUST READ: Rolling Victory Fast 2006!
Friday, July 7, 2006, 10:31 PM

(Tanker Brothers) Because one Tanker Brother is worth (at least) TEN Sean Penns!

Okay, here's the deal: In light of the stupid "Rolling Fast" Stunt that the Crazy Hollywood Left and Conde Pinko have come up with, we here at the Tanker Brothers have decided to come up with our own version: "The 2006 Tanker Brothers Rolling Victory Fast!"

But we need your help: pledge to fast for one day. Just one single day to show your support for those of us who would stand in Crazy Cindy's way. Support us like this: we're proposing a "Rolling Fast", Hollywood Style. I'll kick it off: I will pledge to fast for the first day (we'll kick this off on
Sunday, 9 July 2006), and hand it off to someone, Sean Penn-style. In this case, it will be Cav Tanker. If you wanna take part in this, click the Comments section and sign up for a day. We ask that you keep it in Chronological order: in other words, the first person to sign up will sign up for Tuesday, the next person for Wednesday, and so on and so on.

Milblog Research: Don’t tread on my blog: A study of military web logs
Wednesday, July 5, 2006, 01:03 PM
(University of Oklahoma Department of Communication) As the popularity of Web logs increases, so, too, have the number of military Web logs. Service members, veterans, and family members are blogging from home, from the base, and from the battlefield. These milbloggers are able to write daily reports that anyone in the world – friend or foe – can read. Military public affairs officers may find it harder to manage the message as milbloggers become conduits for information to the public and the media. Little is known about milblogs. How do they tell the military story, and what messages do they convey? Are they perceived as credible? Do they contain more emotional content? This paper analyzes the content of milblogs and how they depict the military and its personnel. It also compares the credibility and tone of milblogs, traditional media, and Defense Department news sources, and how the content from these three sources influences readers’ attitudes toward the war in Iraq and the U.S. military’s continued presence in there.

Happy Independence Day!
Tuesday, July 4, 2006, 04:32 PM
Here's a picture of my homecoming ceremony last year in Virginia .  The picture was taken a few weeks after the Fourth of July.  The picture shows my son, me, my wife and Goofy (aka "Daddy" during my deployment).  Not pictured is our newest addition who arrived this April.

I could go into detail why I like this picture, but it's mainly because it reminds me of my deployment, my family, and my supporters.   And the fact I was thirty pounds lighter.  Damn you McDonald's...

Milblogs in the News: Blog links soldiers with loved ones
Monday, July 3, 2006, 05:26 PM

(Bucks County Courier Times) Patty Walton knows just what her nephew Dale likes: Nilla wafers, crackers, beef jerky and Tastykake Krimpets. Such snack staples aren't available to Dale in war-torn Iraq, the home away from his Falls home.

So, Walton, who lives in
Bristol Borough, sent a care package chock full of goodies, pictures and cards to the Army sergeant.

“That's one thing that really keeps you going, when you get mail from people,” she said. “If anybody has someone out there, the stamps are a good thing. The writing materials are a good thing.”

Now, with the recent launch of The
Bucks County Brave military blog, bucksbrave.blogspot.com, sending food and cheer to soldiers stationed overseas could get even easier.

Webmaster Cory Steiner, 42, of
Lower Makefield launched the site in June to keep Bucks residents in contact with local soldiers. He hopes family members will post addresses of local soldiers serving so schools and individuals can send care packages or letters. Soldiers with Internet access could also post messages to loved ones here in Bucks, he said.

Milblogs in the News: MILBLOGGERS PICK UP WHERE THE MEDIA FAILS
Friday, June 30, 2006, 02:07 PM
(Wizbang) Bruce Kesler wrote an excellent colunn at The Examiner earlier this week that I somehow missed. In it he talks about how eager the media is to report alleged U.S. atrocities in Haditha, even though it now appears many of those allegations were not well founded, and may prove to be outright false. He goes on to note the media is lacking when it comes to coverage of the U.S. heroes doing incredible work in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Milblogger of the Week: Tanker Brothers
Thursday, June 29, 2006, 08:05 PM

This week’s featured Milblogger(s) is Tanker Brothers:  Two Soldiers In The War On Terror.   They’ve been blogging for quite some time, and they seriously kickass (yes, I know, I’ve been using that word a lot lately).  But if you look up “kickass” in the Dictionary, you’ll see a picture of these two.  You might also see a picture of me, too (but we’re not here to talk about me).  Anyway, as soon as I opened their website, my cat ran for it’s life in fear.  And my cat isn’t afraid of anything.  He can even bark and chase dogs.  But the poor thing is still hiding under the bed.  That’s kickass.

The Tanker Brothers, Cav Tanker and Mike Gulf, also chatted with me by email and sent me some info about them that a lot of you may not know.  Here’s what they had to say:

1. We're literally Brothers. From the Same Mamma and Daddy, LOL. The wordplay comes from the fact that we're siblings, and we're both 19K M1A2 Tankers in the US Army.

2. We're both
Iraq War vets, from 2004-2005. We were both in Baghdad during OIF2, literally side-by-by side most of the time.

3. We're both born and bred in the Great State of Texas, and we're currently stationed at Fort Hood, gearing up to go back to
Iraq.

4. We're both NCO's in the Active Army.

5. We started the blog on the tail end of our deployment, back in January 2005. I started it to express our frustration with the situation back home. There we were, kicking butt and taking names, the Iraqi's had just had a successful election, and word back home just wasn't getting out. Our Dad had served two tours in
Vietnam, and we weren't going to stand to be treated like he was when he came back from his second tour. I think our blog is more out of respect and tribute for our Dad and our Uncles who served in Vietnam, and to the fact that they raised us to be Conservative in ideology, Patriotic in deed, and Honorable in everything we aspire to do. The military history of our family goes back generations, and we just kind of try to pay tribute to those things.

6. The bottom line is this: even though we're not back in
Iraq (yet) we're not going to stand around and let our buddies without a voice over there get kicked around back home. That's basically the whole reason we do what we do.

Tanker Brothers is also this week's featured milblogger on Military.com.  Don't forget to send in your nominations for upcoming Milbloggers of the Week.

Milblogging.com Online Store Opens
Thursday, June 29, 2006, 04:47 PM

Don’t forget to check out the Milblogging.com Online Store.  It will include designs I made up last year when I first started the site.  I’m just now getting around to uploading the designs.  I have a few cool ones (including a thong), but right now there's nothing particularly kickass in the store until I fully upload everything.  Anyway, it's worth looking at just to see the word “Milblogging.com” on a t-shirt.  And now, if you’ll excuse me…I’m working on designing a full ninja bodysuit for the online store.  It’s going to be made entirely out of guns and knives.  Which totally rocks by the way, it’s just hard to do a backflip in.

One Milblog Away from # 1,400
Thursday, June 29, 2006, 12:22 AM
Woo Hoo! You better sit down for this news...I'm super serious...We’re only ONE milblog shy of 1,400 in the Milblogging.com database!!! Can you believe it?  Here, I'll give you some paragraph breaks to let the news sink in...

Alright, better? Now, who’s #1,400 gonna be? Man, this is sooo exciting. This is like the time I almost met Chuck Norris.  I was camping outside his house getting ready to spar him as planned.  But apparently, his bodyguards didn’t think it was funny that I was hiding in a tree next to his house.  Or, that I was dressed in all black like a ninja.  Or, that it was 3 AM in the morning.  But seriously, if we had met, I would've taken him.

Anyway, submit some more milblogs people.  Who knows? You could be # 1,400.  Imagine you being # 1,400.  I'm not sure there's any greater honor…

MUST READ: HAD ENOUGH-UPDATE
Wednesday, June 28, 2006, 09:26 PM
(One Marine’s View) Are you tired of hearing the media badger the military? Do you want to send a message to all of the service members fighting the war on terrorism?  We are planning to purchase a full page ad in a major paper to support our troops before July 4th. I’m open for slogans so if you’re tired of blow hearts bad mouthing your Marines, people accusing before being tried, then do something about it. Otherwise you have no room to talk. If you support this idea, let me know in the comments. Give your recommendations for a slogan, newspaper to submit it in and just how you feel. If we get enough support, I’ll make it happen.

Milblogs in the News: Catching Up
Wednesday, June 28, 2006, 03:03 AM
(ThreatsWatch) Last week was a very light week at ThreatsWatch. It was not, clearly, a light week for security events. With developments unfolding in Iran, in the Arab-Israeli conflict and even here at home in Miami, I found myself purposefully disconnected and am in the process of catching up after a week with my family on vacation. The relatively undistracted time spent with them was a drop in the bucket compared to what I still owe them.

Apologies for the interruption in coverage. We’ll be back up to speed in short order, likely through a relatively high volume of InBrief and RapidRecon entries beginning later today.

For now, in an intersting read, Bruce Kesler says that he doesn’t want to be a Military Blogger and explains why in a column today at The Examiner.

Many of those MilBloggers he speaks of can be found contributing at MilBlogs, and many of them are likely just as reluctant as he but also press on out of necessity.

Milblogs in the News: I Don’t Want to be a Milblogger
Monday, June 26, 2006, 08:02 PM

(Military.com – Bruce Kesler) I've been out of the Marine Corps for three-and-a-half decades. Most of what I know, or remember, about combat tactics is out-of-date. I don't nor do I want to own a gun, my only one being the M-16 back then. I'm probably too old to fight, or even run.

Most of what I write about at Democracy-Project.com is not about the war in
Iraq or Afghanistan. I prefer to write about today's problems with healthcare, something I have more current firsthand knowledge about. Good milbloggers are in the combat zones, or have current experience, so understand and focus upon the details that aren't presented in the major media.

Still, many of my posts are about the current war, and more particularly about the media coverage. As an ordinary citizen, I'm concerned to get reliable reporting upon which to make judgments. And, I live in
San Diego, where I have to face the many sincere, squared away Marines and sailors whom I see on the street.

We aren't getting that reliable reporting. Indeed, we usually aren't getting much of any reporting about what's happening at the front, the who, what, when, where, why. Instead, most newspaper columns and TV reports focus on a list of casualties, the inside politics in the Green Zone, or speculations built on little information about the latest prejudged atrocity by
U.S. forces. Much of that information is provided, and passed along by our mainstream media without critical comment or qualifications, from often suspect Iraqi stringers and press manipulators among our foes.

Milblogs in the News: No Such Thing as National Security When the New York Times has Papers to Sell
Sunday, June 25, 2006, 02:20 PM
(Wizbang!) In today's editorial, the New York Times tries to defend itself after being roundly denounced for exposing an effective antiterror program that tracked terrorists' financial transactions. Their arguments are complete drivel.

Heather MacDonald has a piece in The Weekly Standard, which tears apart the New York Times' so called defense. Here's a portion, but be sure to read all of it…

Friday Milblogging Humor
Friday, June 23, 2006, 08:48 PM
I can't take credit for finding these little "pearls of wisdom".  My buddy (Hi Donkey) sent me the list.  I still don’t know what this entry has to do with milblogging, but I met my buddy online while blogging from Afghanistan.  So, there's a connection in there somewhere.  Anyway, while reading the list, I suggest you replace “Chuck Norris” with “JP”.   It sounds much better.  In French, "Chuck Norris" actually means "JP".  In fact, people always seem to get me mixed up with "Chuck Norris".  It's weird, because I look nothing like him.  The only thing we have in common is that we're both badasses.

Chuck Norris Facts

1.  Guns don't kill people. Chuck Norris kills People.

2.  There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of animals Chuck Norris allows to live.

3.  Chuck Norris does not sleep. He waits.

4.  The chief export of Chuck Norris is Pain.

5.  There is no chin under Chuck Norris' Beard. There is only another fist.

6.  Chuck Norris has two speeds. Walk, and Kill.

7.  The leading causes of death in the
United States are: 1. Heart Disease 2. Chuck Norris 3. Cancer

8.  Chuck Norris drives an ice cream truck covered in human skulls.

9.  Chuck Norris is my Homeboy.

10.  Chuck Norris doesn't go hunting.... CHUCK NORRIS GOES KILLING

Thanks to Keith for the tip.

Milblogs in the News: Wounded Troops Receive Laptops from Soldiers Angels
Friday, June 23, 2006, 02:55 AM
(The Conservative Voice) Pasadena, California -- June 21, 2006 - During every war, in which the United States has been involved, civilian groups have come into existence which were composed of individuals dedicated to providing for the human needs of American soldiers and their families. Programs such as the Overseas YMCA Workers Program played a pivotal role in helping American soldiers while they were deployed and when they returned from the battlefield during World War I.:

Today, during the War on Terror, many similar charitable organizations have emerged to provide for the needs of the American soldiers and their families. The memberships of such organizations are diverse and include among their ranks veterans, milbloggers, family members of soldiers and civilians.

Milblogger of the Week: bandit.three.six
Wednesday, June 21, 2006, 10:57 PM

About this time every week, I write about my pick as Milblogger of the Week.  That, and I benchpress 300 pounds in the weight room (but I’ll save that for later).  This week’s Featured Milblogger is Bandit.three.six who’s been milblogging since January.  BANDIT.THREE.SIX is a Signal Officer
currently deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and he’s stationed in the International Zone (aka the Green Zone) in Baghdad.  Oh yes, more bad news for the MSM…another milblogger who tells it like it really is, instead of the imbecile games the media plays.  I’m still not sure what we would’ve done without milblogs like Bandit.three.six.  To be fair though, I heard it’s pretty hard to sit behind a desk and read from a teleprompter.  Okay, so when I was six years old I could do it. And I think if I trained my lazy cat long enough, I could get him to do it, too.  I once trained him to push a little toy shopping cart and wear little pants. It’s really cute.

Anyway,
Bandit.three.six is currently home on R&R in Germany with his wife awaiting the arrival of their newborn.  So get over to Bandit.three.six and wish him the best. Here’s a little background some of you may not know about him: He joined the Army ROTC in his second year of college after the September 11th attacks and after graduation in 2004 he was commissioned into the US Army Signal Corps on Active Duty.  Signal was a natural fit for him -- A) because his major in college was Management of Information Systems and b) he had always been something of a geek (according to him, not me).  Really.  More importantly he finds that the media is doing a piss-poor job of telling their audience about the fight in Iraq.  As he writes to me by email, “There is so much good news about the war out there it's staggering.”

Here’s an excerpt from his blog:

Little-Known Facts of Victory

The assessment of Iraqi Security Force status is done on the following scale

Independent - At this level the unit conducts operations independently of the Coalition. This is the desired endstate for all Iraqi Security Forces.

In the Lead - At this level the unit is responsible for planning and conducting operations and is supported by the Coalition.

Capable - At this level the unit participates in operations that are planned and conducted by the Coalition.

Training - At this level the unit is just forming and is being trained.

In a four month period between October and February, the number if Iraqi Army battalions assessed at levels 1 & 2 rose 32% to a total of 53. This means that these units are responsible for securing their country, not the Coalition.

- article about unit transition from level 3 to level 2.
In a poll conducted during the same period, it was shown that more than two thirds of Iraqis believe that the Iraqi Security Forces are winning the battle against terrorism. TWO THIRDS OF IRAQIS THINK WE'RE WINNING!!!

Bandit.three.six is also this week's featured milblogger on Military.com.  Don't forget to send in your nominations for upcoming Milbloggers of the Week.

Milblogs in the News: Murtha vs. Rove
Tuesday, June 20, 2006, 01:45 PM
(Slate) Bloggers discuss John Murtha's targeting of Karl Rove's "big, fat backside." They also react to North Korea's missile test plans and a high school that anointed 41 valedictorians.

Murtha vs. Rove: Stepping up the recent rhetoric regarding the
Iraq war, Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha ridiculed Karl Rove on Meet the Press Sunday. Rove gave a speech last week in which the president's senior adviser criticized Murtha's call for a quick withdrawal and rebuked the Democrats' "old pattern of cutting and running." In response, Murtha said, "You can't sit there in the air-conditioned office and tell troops carrying 70 pounds on their backs, inside these armored vessels hit with IED's every day, seeing their friends blown up-their buddies blown up -- and he says stay the course? Easy to say that from Washington, D.C.
"

In
Washington, the Iraq
war debate has intensified in recent days as Republicans seek to capitalize on Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's death and Democrats, on the defensive, propose a Senate resolution seeking a timetable for a phased withdrawal.

Murtha's latest rant may rally some on the left—"If EVER there was someone deserving to be the Speaker of the House (it's) Jack Murtha,"
writes commenter Curlew on Daily Kos—but his reasoning is giving ammunition to others.

"I don't seem able to speak 'Murtha,' "
concludes
Colorado blogger Jeff Goldstein at Protein Wisdom. "John Murtha has now made the transition from gutless Congressional peace activist to outright laughingstock," writes Froggy at military blog Blackfive.

Milblogs in the News: Murtha: We can support Iraq from Okinawa. Okinawa!?
Tuesday, June 20, 2006, 01:41 PM
(The QandO Blog) I first read about this among various milblogs yesterday and I thought, "surely he really didn't say we could successfully support our effort in Iraq from Okinawa?" There has to be some overreaction or mischaracterization or contextual problem with what I'm seeing and hearing. No one, espeically a guy with a military background, would make that sort of claim.

Well, I was wrong

New Milblogs Added: June 13th – 19th
Monday, June 19, 2006, 11:33 PM
We’re only 13 milblogs away from 1,400.  Some people said I was crazy when I told them there were more than 1,000 milblogs on the internet.  They also said I was crazy when I proclaimed the Olsen Twins will someday receive an Academy Award.  Stick around, people, it’s just a matter of time.   Yeah, okay, just because I was right about milblogs doesn’t mean I’m going to be right about the Olsen Twins…or am I?

Update: MilitaryBlog.com
Saturday, June 17, 2006, 04:52 PM
Andi of Andi’s World is now appearing on MilitaryBlog.com.  For those of you not in the know (Hi Anderson Cooper), here’s a little bit about Andi:

“Andi began milblogging in early 2005. She is married to an active-duty soldier who just completed a tour of duty in Afghanistan. Andi is an ambassador for Sew Much Comfort, an all-volunteer organization which makes special, adaptive clothing for our wounded troops. Andi organized the Inaugural MilBlog Conference, which took place on April 22 in Washington, DC…”

MilitaryBlog.com is a great source for reading the writings of other great milbloggers, like Blackfive, Wordsmith at War, and others.  This week’s featured blogger is Mudville Gazette’s Milblogs.  Anyway, I think it’s a great alternative to the MSM.  And I normally don’t watch the MSM, particularly CNN, for the same reason I don’t slam my fingers in the car door or eat rat poison.
